Guide To The Best Tents for Tall People

Best-Tall-Camping-Tents

Finding a suitable camping tent is not an easy task, and it becomes even harder when you or one of the members in your group are also tall.

Tents by their very nature are compact, and with taller people requiring more space in general; when it comes to camping, finding enough head height and sleeping room can become extremely difficult if you don’t know what to look for.

Unfortunately for people 6-feet and over, most tents don’t have dimensions both long and high enough to make living in them comfortable, and as a result tall people often find themselves hunched over when standing, and unable to stretch their legs when sleeping. Leading to varied degrees of uncomfortable neck, back and leg pain.

Whilst there are several very good tall camping tents available, the majority of other tents on the market don’t have enough combined height and length to successfully cater for taller campers, and as a result one dimension is often sacrificed for the other.

In this guide we outline the key areas that need to be considered, and shortlist what we believe to be some of the best tents available for tall people. Continue reading for an in-depth buyer’s guide and our reviews of the six best tall tents.

What classifies a tall person?

Firstly it’s important to clarify and understand who is considered to be tall. Although the term “tall” is slightly subjective, according to the National Center for Health Statistics, the average height for an adult male is approximately 5’9″ (69.1 inches) and a female, is typically 5’4″ (64 inches).

Therefore and taking into account above average measurements, global locations, and a little flexibility, typically anyone at and above a height of 6ft / 6.1ft is considered to be tall.

What are the critical aspects of tents for tall people?

For tall people; aside from having to occasionally crouch down to hear people, negotiate more leg room on public transport, and/or duck under doorways; when it comes to camping, it is the size of the sleeping area, the internal head height and the amount of available storage space that has the largest impact on their comfort.

If either of these factors are missing, problems start to occur with being unable to stretch legs out while lying or sleeping, having to crouch when standing, and ducking when entering and exiting. All of which can lead to leg cramping, back pain and annoyance.

Key areas to consider

  • Porch and awning space – Tents that provide a protected and good sized porch area can be used to store equipment and free up internal space to provide extra room when sleeping. Particularly when camping in hot weather, this area can also double up as an extension to the living and sleeping zones.
  • Porch and awning size – Secondly, there is a large difference between smaller and taller tents when is comes to the size of the porch and awning. A 6 or 7 foot tent can offer far greater protection from both the sun and rain, whilst providing a practical and sheltered external cooking area for example.
  • Guy ropes/straps –Generally speaking, tents that are suitable for tall people are naturally larger and more prominent than regular options, and require extra support to ensure they are pitched correctly and remain that way during bad weather. Therefore it is important to ensure that they are supplied with guy ropes and straps for additional support.
  • Pitching time – Larger tents require additional time, effort and people to erect them, and so be sure to plan your trip accordingly as they are often not suitable for solo camping and/or when needing to pitch in a hurry.
  • Floor-length – For tall campers wanting to keep the size of their tent to a minimum; to ensure a comfortable nights sleep, priority should be placed on the size of the sleeping area over a good head height. If you aren’t sure what size you need, pick one size up from the number of people in your party. This way, you won’t be short on space.
  • Head height – The second important factor is of course head height, and if you plan to spend a lot of time inside your tent then this becomes just as important as the above floor area.
  • Entry – Tall tents are able to provide a more domesticated and formal entrance, that enables the inhabitants to seamlessly walk in and out of the tent without having to crawl. This is particularly beneficial during long periods and when staying with multiple people.
  • Hooks – Tents with tall ceilings provide the perfect opportunity to hang a light and/or fan without them become obstructive, and if supplied with a hook in the right location they can be hung practically from the ceiling.
  • Ventilation – Taller tents are of course large and the interior spaces can quickly become hot and stuffy if not ventilated correctly. Therefore ensure that your tent can provide adequate cross ventilation via openable vent panels and doors.
  • Warranties –Buying anything from a reputable company has its obvious advantages and this is no different when it comes to buying a tent. So aim for well know and established brands such as the ones above, to ensure that is anything goes wrong, it is covered.
